About gDonna
The photo is my son and myself. Now days you can get a photo made to look old like this one. This photo was taken when this was the new look.

Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables. The Making of A Home

April 9, 2026

There is a house, and there is a home, and there is much difference in the two.

The making of a home can be made from any type of dwelling, it is up to us to turn it into a home.  It can be most any type of dwelling, it can be as simple as our bedroom in our house should we live with others.  It can be a tent, a camper or travel trailer, for some people it is their car.

Those fortunate to have a full house or an apartment,  it would be a shame to leave it just as that and not make it a home.

Have you ever walked into someone's home and feel this place is special?  My Aunt Ruth had a home, I loved her small house that was full of her sewing fabric and her button box that I have talked about before.  She was seamstress and she used every bit of her space in her home for the things that she loved to do.

When I think of a real home, I think about comfort, care taken for the things we have.

By the way while this photo is up, I thought about something I saw the other day to remind people about borax and how many people do not know about the use of borax to get rid of smells in laundry.  Someone asked me many years ago how to make her linen closet smell like her grandmothers linen closet and I said that it was probably due to her hanging her laundry on the line but I forgot to mention borax will get rid of odors that are trapped in fabric.

I have read that many people complain about their washing machines smell bad or their clothes smell bad after laundering and we knew this long ago but new soaps and new fabrics made borax not be the thing to use but it was good back then and good today.  Just read on the back of a box of borax if you want your linen closet and your clothing to smell clean.  There are certain fabrics that we should not use borax on such as silk and other things but just read the directions.

The making of a home is about homemade food.  Warm meals that fill the belly or cool meals in the summer.  It makes fond memories for children when they tell stories of waking up to the smell of breakfast cooking or coming home late in the day and they can smell supper before they even get into the door.

Adding flowers to our yard that bring in nature....

Taking care of the things we have.

Mending is part of making a home, we use it up and wear it out and then repurpose it again.

Setting a pretty table even if it is a afternoon snack.

My large enamel bowl that I like to use to carry out the small laundry items. It is perfect to hang those left over small items to dry.

The making of a home is preserving food.

Or spending more time at the dinner table because it is just special.

The making of a home is baking that cake that everyone enjoys and taking some slices to a neighbor.

The making of a home is doing those repetitive things over and over and every time you do, it just feels right.

Our home will give back to us if we use our space, to create comfort, to make it a restful place to be, to nourish us, and to make it a place to where people  leave with a good feeling and inspiration and have felt love.

The making of a home usually comes from the most simple things, and that is by making a simple home filled with love.

Up in the forum is a place where we gather to talk with our fingers.  We talk about anything but politics.  Have you started on the making of a home?

Do you have spaces that feel just right?  A chair by the window, a special table cloth,  a favorite quilt or blanket,  a dresser scarf that you took the time to embroider, or a simple edging added to washcloths?

Do you have that meal or dessert, bread that everyone loves?

Today it is important to make our home be all that it can be and sometimes that is simply organizing and cleaning our home so we feel better and our home feels better.

We all love to see what others are doing, see you in the forum.
