We continue with Lil's diary. Lil and her husband Bob are living in 1943, world war 2 is going on. They are both in their 70's and Bob does war duty by going to the top of a local hotel for war plane watch. Lil is the writer of the diary.
Monday, April 12, 1943. Fine & Mild. Worked Nuco & worked couple hours in yard - Bob home late 2: P.M Moved tree for Ruth.
Tuesday, April 13. Nice day. Bob home at 1:15. Up town to shop. Ruth & Judy along.
Wednesday April 14. Cloudy but no rain. Baked "just right" cookies. Bob home 1:30 Cut Frahms lawns.
Thursday April 15. Cloudy & cold wind. Letter from Helen & Jean Heilberg. Roast leg o lamb for dinner, the first in months.
Friday April 16. Nice day. Made Jello cocktail Bob home 1:38 trimed & pruned bushes at G. doors. ( Maybe Garage doors) Mrs. Petty Green Called.
Saturday April 17. Fine day - Cleaned up front yard & sprinkled Lawn - cleaned venetian blinds - Bob home 1:35
Sunday April 18 Sick, went to bed early -
End of this weeks reading for Lil's diary. Don't worry, Lil is okay her diary picks up the next day.
Now we continue with the diary reading of Leana. Leana is widowed and her son Richard lives with her. This is during world war 2 and the country has started food rationing as well as many other items such as gasoline, shoes, typewriters and mechanical items. Lena seems to be having difficulty with using her ration stamps too quickly.
Monday, April 12, 1943. 23 degrees. Not very cold but came on windy late P.M. and sprinkled a little looks like rain. Did my washing and have taken in the clothes from the piazza. Aught to have gone over street but feel too tired to stir out. The fire alarm rang and smoke drifted up here but didn't stay long. I hope there is no serious fire. Think I'll go over street tomorrow a.m. and do some errands. Had # 5 coupons for oil and had enough for 108 gallons.
Tuesday, April 13. 37 degrees. Gradually grew cloudy and looks like rain. Must have rained a little last night bright Sun this morning. I couldn't seem to do much this forenoon. Made up custards and had chicken again today will make one or two pints of soup and can. Got 1/4 lb dried beef first I've had in a long time and some cold meat for Richards supper. Then went over street and mailed 4 letters and got a few things.
Wednesday, April 14. 33 degrees. Snow on the ground when I got up just soft snow but it came all day in spells. Sun first time. Made 3 pints of vegetable soup out of what was left of the chicken put in carrots and onion a tiny bit of rice. Did the ironing. had the dried beef and creamed carrots & mince pie for dinner. pea soup for his supper. I have to count my points and will get used to it in time. Order tomorrow. Must start to paper.
Thursday, April 15. 37 degrees. Started papering this P.M. made coffee icecream. Got the paste made didnt have much time so didnt start this a.m. took out the ashes. Did quite a lot of the papering but couldnt start very early. Will have to get used to the paper as it doesnt show as I expected looks rather pale but is so nice and clean.
Friday, April 16. 20 degrees. Did most of the papering today and went over street on errands. Should have done more but felt tired and not much time. Even if it is late I'll try and finish as only a little patching and the border. This has been quite a cool day and snowed some. A very late Spring so far.
Saturday, April 17. 37 degrees. Well I finished papering but took me til 6:15 and I thot I had it most done now must send for the floor covering shall take up the one there and clean and wash the floor then put it back and lay the new one over it.
Sunday, April 18. 29 degrees. Seems warmer today. I didnt go to church and had steak and spinach Unusually good steak and the spinach too was without waste. I'll have to think of the garden soon but think I'll begin on Richards room it is so dirty and the ceiling is worse than mine was. Guess I dread the garden as it is grassed in not having been planted all over for two years.
The end of this weeks diary reading. I am glad to see that Lena is going to try to count and keep up with her points for food rationing. We will see how she does as we go along with the diary. Will be back next week with the diaries. Grandma Donna
