The clothesline

I am making a quick post today just to discuss some questions and comments this past week about clotheslines.  Several people commented that where they live, they are not allowed to dry their laundry outside on a clothesline.

Others questioned why and sadly, the answer is this is true in different states or HOA's in our country of the United States.

However, please know that people have been fighting back for quite awhile  and now we have a "Right to Dry" law and different states have changed the laws so that you can dry your laundry on a clothesline. There has been progress made.

Check your state laws to see about the Right to Dry Law in your state. My daughter lives in Florida and in a HOA, and thankfully they changed their law to allow clotheslines. The last time I checked, the law said that even if an HOA does bans clotheslines , the Florida Statute 163.04 which prohibits homeowners associations from banning the use of clotheslines. A HOA is a homeowners association.  Another article from 2022 said that HOA that outright bans clotheslines is unenforceable in the state of Florida.  However there seems in some cases HOA maybe dictate the size and location of the clothesline. 

I know to some of you and to me this sounds unbelievable that people are told they cannot dry their laundry on a clothesline. Many states have changed their laws from banning to allowing so check with your state and if your state law overrides your HOA.  Also, it is possible that your municipality may have it's own laws and not a state law such as Alabama.  Such as Alabama generally allows clotheslines but suggests to check your municipality.

Charles and I are planning on starting our 1930s study this Thursday on May the 1st.  I feel very relaxed about this study because we are going to be living like the 1930s and for some strange reason it seems like a better place to be right now.  Imagine that!
