About gDonna
The photo is my son and myself. Now days you can get a photo made to look old like this one. This photo was taken when this was the new look.

Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables. Peek Week Saturday, Baking Day :)

April 26, 2025

Today is Saturday baking day, and we crank up the fire and bake our breads, pies, crackers, doughnuts and a cake.

Sarah from my 1932 diary was always baking each Saturday. She would bake bread and Kuche, (something like a breakfast bread).  She baked items for the upcoming week. My Aunt Leona baked many loaves of sweet bread each Saturday.

Sarah would make her bread sponge the night before and baked bread and sweet  Bread, her Kuche which is most likely a sweet breakfast bread.

Sarah also made doughnuts.

We can make our crackers for the upcoming week.

Saltines are easy to make.  I do not have the time to post recipes today but you can easily find recipes on the internet.

Having a weekly schedule truly is helpful to run a proper household. I do not always stay on a schedule but I often go back to it and get things in order and somewhat stay on it.

They did bake other items during the week but mostly after mid week. Saturday Baking day was the big baking day. They did not buy the premade items that we have today that we call junk food.

Staying on a household management schedule keeps us from running out to the store frequently, food was more planned keeps us from getting expensive take outs. We seem to be in a time that it is good to know these things.

There are so many options to make a pie.

I have a favorite bread dough I make and I can make all kinds of breads from the dough.  It is posted in several places on my blog.

This is raisin bread and I love to eat it toasted with butter.

These are scones with currants.

A pumpkin roll

Hot milk cake one of our favorites.

Cinnamon buns

A yummy peach cobbler

This is also a family favorite

This is a no pecan pie that I make because my grandson has food allergies.  It tastes the same without the pecans.

And this is my white cake.  Sarah, in the 1932 diary, was always making a white cake and this diary made me get good at my own white cake.

In the past people visited one another often and there seemed to be more family around than we have today.

This may seem a bit much today with smaller families so we simply bake smaller amounts.  If we have a proper dessert made at home it would keep us away from expensive snacks.

I hope I made you hungry so maybe you will start your weekly schedule :) Doing this post has given me a kick in the pants so I will straighten up and get back to my schedule.

Don't tell anyone but Monday Charles and I are going to go back to 1932.  Those that you were reading along then know that we had to drop the study after we started.  We had a rocky kick off and then a short time in we dealt with illness.

We are keeping it quiet so nothing goes wrong this time. :) Remember as Charles says, third time is the charm.

This week I have been sneaking in some photos from my 1930s study as a very quiet hint.

I will see you tomorrow, our last day of Peek Week and maybe the Sunday Post will get you jump started.

I wonder if we will have some friends to show up in 1930s?  I would love to see you there.  This time we will not have all the intense study facts, we can go back to my January and February 2023 posts to get the facts if we need them.

This time we will simply be living like the 1930s, how simple can that be?

I will miss my hair dryer, or we could choose six non 1930s items?  I will have to borrow the air conditioner and take into the 1930s, that would be one item.  What would your six items be?

I am going to go back to calling the bedroom the Bed Chamber, it sounds so proper. :)

See you tomorrow for our last day of Peek Week.
