About gDonna
The photo is my son and myself. Now days you can get a photo made to look old like this one. This photo was taken when this was the new look.

Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables. Now on to see what Lena is doing.....

This is the diary of Lena and her son Richard.

Friday, October 15, 1943.  Rainy this a.m.  Pearl came in this P.M. and walked over street when I went.  I did a little shopping bot Richard a $5.00 bond and that makes 3 of that denomination besides 27 $1.00 ones if I counted right.  Bot a large can of fine apple juice etc.

Saturday, October 16.  This is a dark dismal day rained last night it looks like more rain   Got smart today, Richard left word he'd go to Woodstock if it didn't rain but he didn't go altho think it just looked as if it would.   Scrubbed up the kitchen floor with the mop and cleaned the rugs and washed the red piazza chair ready to paint   Did the usual brushing up and beds.   Went down to the Public Market for the first time.  It is  under new management got steak & Oranges etc.  Must rest awhile then do a little ironing.

Sunday, October 17.  Rainy this morning.  Made ice cream and cooked some carrots  had steak and washed potatoes.  Had to plan for Richards lunch and supper  fish hash and canned Mac-  for him an orange, toast and tea.  I had crackers and milk.

Monday, October 18.  Did my washing and went over street afternoon and did quite a lot of shopping at the A&P but went no further got home at 3 O clock but didn't feel like doing much but got in the cloches made a wood fire in the furnace after I got back as we want one in the evening.

Today is cold and cloudy   Seems to me it is about time to have a fire in the furnace but we must save coal and also oil.   Ironed some this a.m. and put up 4 pts cranberries.  Went down to the Public Market got oranges and liver  small piece  S. pork after dinner went over st.  Paid tele.  did personal shopping got Richard stocking 4 pair . 76 cents got some groceries at  A & P.  Didn't build a fire till almost 6 O clock which took the chill off the front room but we used the oil heater.

Wednesday, Oct 20, 1943.  Finished the ironing this forenoon and ordered.  Had spinach and bacon mashed potatoes & Johnny cake and made "rennet"  Custard.  Mrs.  Dennison came before I had my dishes washed was quite surprised and glad to see her and we had a very nice visit.  Didn't go out.  I had some Kentucky wonder beans baking and she helped me eat them they were very good.

Thursday, October 21.  Mrs. Denison called a taxi and went up to visit her brother on the hill.  They are both quite lame but plan to go south the 30th if they are able.  Mrs. Denison is blind in one eye and the other is not very good  she is having glasses made in Lebanon.

This is the end of this weeks Diary reading. Lena seems to be getting stronger. We will be back next week to continue with the diaries.
