Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables. Lena seems like she is a little spoiled and struggles to understand rations and getting by. She reminds me of my mother in law, eating a lot of sweets and complaining. I will say she has done a good job putting in the garden and tending it. I hope she finds her way as we continue to read. And I assume Richard is under 36 or was it 38, when she mentioned her anniversary a few readings back.
Grandma Donna wrote, Holly D, Lena does have her struggles with her health and Richard is her son. Richard does seem to have his issues as well. Richard's work is cleaning in a large business of some type. Lena is in her 70's and you are right, she does have a difficult time managing her rations. :)
