Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables. The Diary readings April 19-25 ,1943

April 18, 2022

We are continuing the 1943 diary's of Lil and Lena. our first diary is Lil and Bob. This is during world war II , Bob and Lil are in their mid- 70's and Bob does war duty by going to the top of the towns hotel to watch for war planes. Lil is a homemaker.

Monday April 19 , 1943. cold wind-not doing much-Bob cut lawn in backyard-R&M over in eve-

Tuesday April 20. still windy-Bob home at 1-15- uptown to shop- Bob got a new sweater-

Wednesday April 21. nice day- cleaned & demothed the couch- Bob resting- Ralph & Koky came up Ralph being transferred to coast artillery-

Thursday April 22. warm day- watered lawns in forenoon- Bob cut front lawns & trimmed edges-

Friday April 23. good Friday. light rain during night- Bob cut F's lawn. uptown for bread & out D. St. to see Riggetto flowers

Saturday April 24. fierce wind all day- cleaned bedroom-Bob home at 1-40.

Sunday April 25.   Easter Sun' Fine day Bob at watch tower- 8 to 11a.m. had chicken dinner from whites C. over at Frahms for dinner at 5-30.

This is the diary of Lena and her son Richard. Lena is in her 70's and is a widow & homemaker and Richard works in janitorial and heavy cleaning downtown.

Monday, April 19 ,1943. 34 degrees this is quite a day Richard came home early to dinner and I went to " Gone with The Wind "got there early but got tired of it and came out at 4 oclock and did some shopping got NUCOA 1 lb. and some meat at Joe's spent twelve points I shant  be able to do that very often Did my washing and when i came home took in the clothes and folded and sprinkled them after supper.

Tuesday, April 20, 36 degrees This morning the ground was covered with snow just a little but it is all gone I guess it will come warm sometime They say a full moon tonight and in 2 weeks we can plant peas. My tomato plants don't grow very fast and the peppers are just coming up and I sewed all the seeds April 1st. The aster's came in about the 8th Did all the ironing and cleaned all the silver. Then mended a little.

Wednesday, April 21, 36 degrees made cup custards and had a can of chicken I canned in March as my grocery man didnt get my order. He didn't have much meat anyway. went over street and did some buying! Bot a $5 bond for Richard and sent P.O. order to H. O. L and sent an order to Sear's for a linoleum rug and border for the little room I have papered.

Thursday, April 22, Today is a real spring day didnt do much cleaning just cleaned the linoleum in the small room and washed the floor and got it down Pearl came over a short time P.M. so I didnt begin to wash the ceiling in Richard's room I'm anxious to plant peas but have to order fertilizer and think I will have 10 lbs of lime as cant grow beets. ordered sirloin steak 20 cents a lb Richard thout not as good as round.

Friday, April 23, 29 degrees. Quite a warm day altho a white frost this morning Tried to order but not much to be had and have 8 points after getting a package of dried beef 3 points and had a frozen ocean fillet ,I think. Made a small chowder for Richard's supper and  will have the rest for tomorrow dinner. I started washing his ceiling but didnt quite finish will try again tomorrow. Get pretty tired but feel things must be done as that room is very smoky as the little one downstairs was.

Saturday, April 24, 30 degrees when I looked but the sun was up and a white frost. Colored 2 lbs NUCOA yesterday and will begin on it sometime today It should last at least 2 weeks I finished the ceiling and must do all I can next week. The paper came I sent for 88 cents for a whole room and think I'll use that Got the house in fair order and went shopping got Richard's Absorbine  Jr 1.25 and me a bottle of wampoles 89 cents. Bot donuts and rye bread & a cake. we have dried beef for Sunday.

Sunday, April 25, 35 degrees this isnt a very bright Easter and I staid  home an rested . The linoleum border came yesterday so I must lay that. I should have written several letters but was tired and didnt feel up to it  May later its most supper time now.

This ends the readings of the diary's for this week. we will continue the readings next week. Grandpa Charles for Grandma Donna, she has vertigo today. the mistakes are way diary's written.
