Tania from Australia
This is our house, taken from our driveway area.
We live in rural
South Australia on two and a half acres of land. We are situated on
the edge of the Australian outback. It is really dry here with very
little rain and we struggle to grow plants, whether they be vegetables
or flowers.
The Laundry Room.
I use a twin tub washing machine and dry my laundry on a clothes line. I do not own a clothes dryer as there are not many days that I cant get my washing dry. In Winter I have a clothes line under the verandah that I use. What washing doesn't dry is brought inside to finish off in front of our warm fire.
Washing drying on the clothes line.
Here is my kitchen sink. I have a double sink and my kitchen window looks out over our outdoor area. There are two tomatoes on the window sill. These were picked from the garden this morning and I am ripening them further by sitting them in the light.
I use one of these vintage soap savers to wash dishes occasionally. Just a bar of soap placed inside the mesh and then hold under running water. I don't own a dishwasher and have no interest in getting one.
Outside we have rainwater tanks.
Because we live in a low rainfall
area of Australia, collecting rain water is a must. There are more tanks
at the other end of the house. We have about 18,500 gallons in storage.
The water is used for drinking and watering the garden.
On the roof of the shed you can see our solar panels.
We also have solar hot water on our house roof. The air conditioner is shown with the green cover on. We will be removing the cover soon when the heat arrives.
Here is a picture of my Summer garden. This was taken in January this year. I didn't grow many vegetables over Winter, just the ones left over from Summer. At the moment there are quite a few weeds growing out there, but now Spring is here I am preparing the garden once again. I am making a few changes to the way I garden this year and will be posting this on my blog as I progress.
A reminder to visitors to this website that when Australia goes into spring USA goes into fall.
