About gDonna
The photo is my son and myself. Now days you can get a photo made to look old like this one. This photo was taken when this was the new look.

Harry S Truman was president when I was born and world war II had ended. I grew up in a time when lunch was put in a brown paper bag and a sandwich was wrapped with wax paper. There was no such thing as pantyhose, we wore stockings that attached to the rubbery clippy things that attached to the girdle. Convenience stores were not common and when we took a trip we packed a picnic basket because many places did not have fast food. Highways had places to pull over and stop, some with picnic tables. Occupation Homemaker

November 20, 2017

We all have occupations.  When we fill out a form and it asks for our occupation there is always something to say even if we are unemployed or retired.

I am a homemaker, a manager.  If Charles were retired he would be lawn care,  maintenance and gardener but he is also a woodworker, designer and many things more.  Charles still works outside the home so he has many jobs.

When I was working for many years, raising a family and being a homemaker I held many jobs.  If you really count all the jobs it was probably something like 85 jobs.

I read a comment online from a young lady that said, "I don't have time to be a homemaker, I have children to take care of!  I feel there was a disconnect there.

Occupation Homemaker

Includes keeping a home, making meals and the kagillion other things to do including caring for children.

I don't always do a great job being a homemaker.  Our home gets messy too.  Sometimes I feel if it were an outside the home job I would get fired.  But it is not.  We are not to be perfect in our home.  We are to enjoy our home.

But we cannot enjoy our home when we have clutter.  It makes the work we do harder and it becomes a drudge.   Everything does not have to be in place all the time but it does make us feel better when it is clean.

Some chores can seem to come right back.  To be honest my dishes will pile up because I am not good at washing as I go.  I eventually get around to washing them because I know that the longer they wait the worse it is to clean them.  It is one of those things that has to be done or we risk bugs and unwanted germs.

I always feel a sense of relief when the kitchen is clean and then I am ready to do other things.

There are many things to be done at home.  We need food and clean laundry, our bathrooms need to be clean, our floors, windows and many other things.  It is part of life.  Keeping a home is a priority otherwise we live in a unclean home.  There are so many things to do in this modern world that often we don't balance the things that we do.

New gadgets are being invented so fast our homes are not even designed to have a place for these things and this causes unnecessary clutter.  We should take this into consideration before purchasing.

We don't have to do housework all day long.  We can design and make things such as in this bobbin lace pattern I am making.  Making things for the home is part of being a homemaker if we want it to be.

I love to learn new things.  I just cannot sit around watching television and letting my life go by.  We got rid of our televisions all but a very small one for news and weather if there is something going on that we need to know about.

It can be most anything that interest us.  A mother knitting or working on a project is very good for children.  It can settle them and they can play or learn to do something such as this too.

I have never been trained to do the things I do, I learn how to from from books. But there are other ways such as the internet. You can do these things too.

I like to tat, crochet, bobbin lace, sew, knit and most anything.

It is all part about being a homemaker if we just don't get wrapped up in one thing and leave the things that need to be done.

Laundry is something that piles up easily so it is best dealt with right away and just get it over with.  So if we make our laundry, dishes and bathrooms priority the other things will not be so bad.

I like to make rugs....

And Elizabeth likes for me to make them.

There is work to be done in the garden if we want fresh food.  It can be planted in a pot or garden as long as it is planted.

This is soap I am grating.

We stress so easily today because people are trying to do so many things.  The first thing is we need to recognize our priorities before taking on all the extras of today.  Many of these extras are not necessary, often they are things we have been talked into doing.

The first thing we do is to make sure we have the time to do the basic things that need to be done.  If we cannot do this then we need to readjust what it is that is taking up our time.

Elizabeth loves to lay in the sun.  Katherine does too.

Elizabeth is a Cocker spaniel  Dachshund mix, her mother was a dachshund but she has more cocker spaniel in her.  She needs grooming often.

Grooming can get expensive so I groom her myself to save money. I am the household manager so I try to find ways to save money.  It is like earning money.

She seems to feel better when I take her coat all the way down.  Bernadette has to be groomed to but she is like grooming a wild cat.

Keeping our drawers tidy is not a priority but helps us to find what we are looking for and to keep track of our clothes.

Life for us keeps changing, many times it is just me changing things but then many things change that I have no control over.  We need to be flexible to allow change in our lives.  Sometimes it is serious changes but we must go on either way because we cannot stop time.  We learn from things that happen in our lives and then we think about it and move on.

I was not raised farming, I was around my family that farmed but I have had to teach myself how to grow vegetables.  I hope this spring we will have more space to grow vegetables.  We are planning on relocating the Shabby Cabby and this will give us more garden space.  You can learn to do any of these things and more.  It is just a matter of doing it.

Another thing I like to do when the housework is done is Tatting.

I didn't know how to do this either but I got a book and learned to do it.

We cannot expect things to stay clean.  Just like window ledges.  We have dust and dirt and weather changes.  A house needs tending so it can become a home.

I could make life easier and just live a modern life but living like the past makes for an interesting life. There seems to be more enjoyment living this way.

I do love to embroidery.  I think this gives me the most pleasure of all the things I make.  Again, I knew nothing about embroidery other than I do like things that have been embroidered.

I do like to bake, I have not worked out what I am going to do about baking since we may not be able to have gluten anymore.  I have been looking into making my own gluten free mix so that might be what I do next.  This is all part of being a homemaker.

This has gotten to be along post so I will finish with saying.  We should make our home a place where we want to stay and be proud of what we do.  We need to relax and make our home comfortable.  That does not mean magazine ready.  Don't stress over things because it only makes those around us tense.  Most homes are not what you see in pictures unless it is a home that is hardly ever lived in.

I hope the young lady that made that comment that she cant be a homemaker because she has to take care of her children comes to her senses soon so her children can be fed, wear clean clothes and sleep in a bed with clean sheets.

Are we getting to a point that some of our younger generation have no examples of what a homemaker is?  I hope not because to me it would be a sad world for to never experience living in a real home. It has nothing to do with the size of the home or what type of building , it is everything to do with love and happiness.  Grandma Donna
